Through the 1990s and 2000s, Ottawa’s Chinatown neighborhood developed an official identity and was eventually designated as the Chinatown Business Improvement Area. A beautiful Chinatown Gateway, or Royal Arch, was unveiled in 2010 as a joint project with Beijing, Ottawa’s sister city.

A few years following the Arch unveiling, and inspired by the arch’s colors, Maglin created these custom colored and modified 400 Series benches and trash containers for the Chinatown streetscape. The bench backs and trash container sides all utilize laser-cut steel and feature a variety of thematic images, including wind-blown lanterns, Chinese characters, bamboo, chrysanthemum, and lotus.
