Shoreview Commons: A Gathering Place for All Seasons
Shoreview Commons is the heart of Shoreview, Minnesota — a gathering space for the whole community, in every season. A skating pond in winter. A destination playground in summer. Pollinator gardens, a skatepark, trails, and event space connecting it all. LHB made that vision real, earning the ASLA Minnesota 2024 Merit Award in General Design in the process.
Maglin was part of both phases.
Phase 1 established the park’s identity. Curved Ogden benches in wood furnish the edges of the central fountain pond — warm and naturalistic in summer, steady companions to the skating rink it becomes in winter. The pond also anchors the park’s stormwater strategy, reusing circulated water to irrigate the surrounding gardens.
Phase 2, which opened in July 2022, brought the destination playground to life around the themes of forests and water. Eight interconnected rain gardens — planted with native, drought-resistant species — manage an acre of stormwater runoff while defining the play and gathering zones. For this higher-energy space, Maglin’s Ogden bench returns in orange HDPE: a bold, playful pop of color that holds up as well as it stands out. Accessible 210 Tables in HDPE ensure the space works for the whole community. HDPE was the right call for both: colorfast, low-maintenance, and built for the demands of a busy public park.
The community’s response was immediate — and it hasn’t let up since.
