Featured Project: Chattanooga's 21st Century Waterfront, TN
ISSUE NO. 7

Landscape Architect: Hargreaves Associates
Contractor: Stein Construction, Continental Construction, East Tennessee Grading

Twenty years ago the residents of Chattanooga envisioned a renaissance for their city along the Tennessee River. The riverfront consisted of an individual area with abandoned warehouses and plants, chain link fences, and a barricaded bridge. A dramatic transformation has taken place and turned what used to be an abandoned area into a beautifully designed and enhanced space. The restoration project began with the introduction of the Tennessee Aquarium in May of 1992. The Aquarium welcomed the start of many new projects and altered the cities course forever.

Chattanooga's 21st Century Waterfront
The waterfront plan includes: major expansions of the Tennessee Aquarium and the Hunter Museum of Art; Extensive renovations of the Creative Discovery Museum; the connection of the art district to downtown via First Street and a new pedestrian bridge; creation of the new River Pier; Renaissance Park, featuring additional public spaces and the preservation of a natural wetland adjacent to Coolidge Park; as well as many other projects.

In 2001 Mr. Corker became Mayor and sought after the help of then Governor Don Sundquist to help complete the transformation of Riverfront Parkway.

With the ownership of the parkway transferred to the city, Mayor Corker unveiled a plan to ambitiously complete the waterfront project in 35 months. The funding of this project was raised through public and private-sectors. In private contributions, Majoy Corker generated a million in a 90-day fundraising effort.

Hargreaves Associates as Lead Designer and Planner, was responsible for developing the 21st Century Waterfront Master Plan that covered 129 acres of waterfront. The plan reconnects the city to its waterfront bringing the river to life once again.

When Maglin was given the opportunity to be involved with the Waterfront Project, Maglin graciously accepted. Maglin's MLB720W Series style benches, MLWR800 trash containers and MLPT721W cluster seating tables were placed on the River Pier, Riverfront Parkway and in Renaissance Park creating multiple places to sit, relax and enjoy the scenery. Maglin worked closely with Hargreaves Associates, Continental Construction, Stein Construction and East Tennessee Grading to enhance the public spaces.
Hargreaves Associates

For over 20 years Hargreaves Associates has and continues to offer full services in Landscape Architecture, planning and urban design. With over two dozen national awards from the American Society of Landscape Architects, Hargreaves continues to grow on a national and international level.

Hargreaves Associates with team architects Schwartz/Silver Architects, developed the master plan for the 129 acre waterfront project on both the north and south sides of the Tennessee River. The design incorporates 83 acres of open space and infrastructure and 46 acres of mixed-use development.

Hargreaves Associates worked with Maglin Site Furniture Inc. to assemble a unique elegant, and exciting vocabulary of urban furniture to accompany Chattanooga's 21st Century Waterfront. Together, a series of benches and seating structures that responded to the immediate surroundings in each of the projects were developed, allowing for a variety of function and aesthetic along the waterfront. Small modifications to an existing bench type resulted in the basic urban seating model that lines the RiverWalk Promenade. Backless models were installed on floating docks, legless models were installed on wide concrete barrier benches, and backless and legless models were installed on custom native lime-stone bases to create intimate terrace spaces.

The City Pier called for a different typology of furniture - at a much larger scale and slightly different function than other waterfront models. These benches were 15' lounging table/seats that created multiple seating areas for visitors to relax and enjoy.

"Through the working relationship between Hargreaves Associates and Maglin Site Furniture Inc., custom designed urban furnishings help pull all of these spaces and experiences together into a single expression of rich elegance and urabn vitality". -- Emma Kelly, Hargreaves Associates
