ISSUE NO. 10

From World-Famous Canadian Whiskey to International Arts and Culture, Toronto's Distillery District has witnessed the flow of history for more than 150 years!

Set on 13 acres of land in the heart of the city, the Distillery District is Toronto's first pedestrian-only village and a major historic district. In 1832, James Worts and William Gooderham immigrated to Canada and established a grist mill. In 1837, a distillery was added and that same year their first whiskey was produced. At its peak, the entire Gooderham and Worts Distillery produced 2.5 million imperial gallons of rye annually!

Much of the whiskey flowed south of the border in the US - even during the Prohibition era. In scenes from the film Chicago starring Richard Gere and Renee Zellweger, the Distillery was used as a set depicting those same Roaring Twenties.
In 1990, after 153 years of continuous production, the Distillery ceased operations. In December 2001 the Distillery was purchased by Cityscape Holdings Inc., later partners with Dundee Realty Corporation, with the vision of creating an environment dedicated to the arts, culture and entertainment. To assist in restoring the area The Planning Partnership, a Toronto based landscape architectural firm, was contracted to design and develop the exterior areas including the selection of site amenities.

Mr. David Leinster of The Planning Partnership selected the Maglin MLWR250-32 trash container with ash tray lid to line the streets of the pedestrian-only district based on its design and durability. The ash tray lid mount inserted in the MLWR250-32 trash container helps unify ash and trash management into one clean unit. The simplistic design of the MLWR250-32 blends well with the vision to maintain the essence of the Distillery's historic surroundings.
The Distillery District

In May 2003 the Distillery was re-opened and has become the most popular film location in Canada. With its cobblestone streets and intimate village-like setting, the Distillery District has attracted internationally acclaimed galleries, artists, cafes, theatres, restaurants and boutique retailers.

The Distillery District is home to some of the country's best music festivals, art festivals, farmers markets, and beer tasting events. From May to December the Distillery has something to offer for everyone's unique tastes.

The Mill Street Brewery located in the Distillery District was built in an original 1870's tank house. The building is a perfect example of classic Victorian industrial architecture. The 6,000 square foot space with 18-foot ceilings includes an open concept brewery, sampling bar, retail store and event space.
