The Distillery District
From World-Famous Canadian Whiskey to International Arts and Culture, Toronto's Distillery District has witnessed the flow of history for more than 150 years!
Set on 13 acres of land in the heart of the city, the Distillery District is Toronto's first pedestrian-only village and a major historic district. In 1832, James Worts and William Gooderham immigrated to Canada and established a grist mill. In 1837, a distillery was added and that same year their first whiskey was produced. At its peak, the entire Gooderham and Worts Distillery produced 2.5 million imperial gallons of rye annually!
Much of the whiskey flowed south of the border into the US - even during the Prohibition era. In scenes from the film Chicago starring Richard Gere and Renee Zellweger, the Distillery was used as a set depicting those same Roaring Twenties. ---See full story here |
